Alabama CB says Jimbo Fisher tipped last play call in crushing Texas A&M loss

The Alabama Crimson Tide escaped an embarrassing home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies last Saturday, and it may be because a certain cornerback has a keen eye for lip-reading.

Alabama’s red-shirt freshman corner Terrion Arnold told AL.com he read the lips of Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher during the final game of the game, where the Crimson Tide came back on their own 2-yard line with Texas A&M with three seconds to win. the game.

“He’s going to be ‘Evan, Evan, Evan,'” Arnold said just as a touchdown for the Aggies would become the second year in a row that upset the College Football Playoff favorite.

The pass actually went to Evan Stewart, the five-star wide receiver recruit who had eight catches for 106 yards so far, including a 23-yard reception against Arnold on that final drive.

This time, however, Arnold was ready. Using the outer shadow on the receiver, he read his haul like a book, and quarterback Haynes King’s throw didn’t even come close.

Arnold was there when Stewart held out his arm, but to no avail. The ball sailed out of bounds and the Crimson Tide held out, going unbeaten at 6-0.

“If they throw it my way, I don’t want to be the most hated man in Alabama,” Arnold added.

Fisher’s play itself was torn apart by many, including former Aggie and Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

“One of the worst phone calls I’ve ever seen in my life,” he wrote on Twitter. “You have one game to beat the number 1 team in the country and that’s what we do.

“Every practice you have a goal-line period and you practice these kinds of situations. That’s a joke or an end for the Aggies.”

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban also noted that the Aggies performed a similar play earlier in the game that resulted in a touchdown. He had no intention of making the same mistake twice, so he called a timeout after seeing the formation they were going with.

“When they scored a touchdown before, we played them inside out and closed the flat assuming they were going to make some sort of choice,” he explained during a weekly tv show he does after every game.
