Kirby Smart Updates Arik Gilbert Status at Georgia Football Team

ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Arik Gilbert practiced with the team this week, but did not say he will travel with the team this week.

The #1-ranked Bulldogs will play in Missouri in Columbia on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

“AG has been practicing with us and he will be on a day-to-day basis and hopefully help us this year,” Smart said at the SEC Coaches teleconference Wednesday.

Smart described Gilbert’s status as “day to day during the week” leading up to last Saturday’s Kent State game. Gilbert got dressed but didn’t play.

Gilbert, who moved from LSU to Georgia after the 2020 season, played in two games this season and took 23 shots with the attack and

Georgia usually keeps practices closed, so media members are not allowed to see and determine which players are practicing and/or to what extent.

Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN recently ranked Gilbert as the No. 1 player at the H-Back in the upcoming NFL draft.

Smart did not clarify the status of defending defender Javon Bullard, who was charged with a DUI early Sunday morning, saying it would be dealt with internally.

Bullard is not expected to travel or play, based on previous UGA disciplinary policies.

Smart said that preseason All-SEC defensive tackle Jalen Carter, who was limited by an ankle injury, gets more work in practice and turning in the line gets more work.

Receiver Ladd McConkey is also getting more work this week, per Smart, after being limited in practice last week.

“It’s a volume issue, not really an injury, he has a toe problem,” Smart said. “This week he has been much better. We shut him down for two days last week.”

Smart said defensive back Tykee Smith and linebacker Xavian Sorey, neither of whom played defensive snaps against Kent State, are “fine”.

Sorey played six special teams snaps in the 39-22 win over the Golden Flashes, while Smith didn’t play.
