Jimmy Garoppolo agrees to revised contract to stay with 49ers as backup

The revised deal will guarantee Garoppolo $6.5 million for this season, according to one of those people. It includes roster bonuses and incentives per game based on play time that could bring the value to nearly $16 million. Before the restructuring, Garoppolo would have made $25.6 million in the final season of his contract.

Throughout the off-season, it looked like Garoppolo, 30, would move to his third NFL team after stints with the New England Patriots and 49ers. San Francisco promised to make Lance in his second season as a starter and authorized Garoppolo representatives to seek a trade.

But Garoppolo’s recovery from an off-season shoulder surgery, his previously cumbersome salary, and the moves other teams had made by the time the quarterback was allowed to resume throwing in late June complicated those efforts. Recently, there has been speculation that the Cleveland Browns could strike a deal for Garoppolo. Instead, they’ve decided to use backup Jacoby Brissett as a starter, while Deshaun Watson is serving his 11-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Garoppolo was in training camp with the 49ers, but did not participate in practices or team meetings, but worked alone while he and the team waited for a trade that fell through. It remains possible that the 49ers will be able to send Garoppolo elsewhere by the November 1 trade deadline. But his contract includes a no-trade clause that would allow him to veto any proposed deal he doesn’t like.

He will be eligible for unlimited free agency after the season, and the contract includes a provision that prohibits the 49ers from using the franchise player tag on him.

Garoppolo kept the 49ers’ starting lane last season, keeping Lance as a rookie on the sidelines, waiting for his chance. But after the 49ers lost to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship game, it was clear the team would likely turn to Lance as a starter for the 2022 season.

Garoppolo was adept at winning games throughout his NFL career. He has made 47 regular season starts for the Patriots and 49ers, and his teams have won 33 of those games. The 49ers have turned 31-14 in the regular season with Garoppolo as the starter. They played in two of the past three NFC title games and advanced to the Super Bowl in the 2019 season before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs.

But some wondered if the 49ers were winning games because of Garoppolo or in spite of him. He has made ill-timed errors and has thrown 38 interceptions and 71 touchdown passes in his career. He had 12 interceptions and 20 touchdown passes last season.

The 49ers traded for the No. 3 roster in last year’s draft and used it on Lance instead of Mac Jones, the 15th pick that helped the Patriots advance to the playoffs as a rookie starter last season.

Garoppolo has spent 4½ seasons with the 49ers, after 3½ seasons as Tom Brady’s understudy with the Patriots. The Patriots traded Garoppolo for the 49ers in October 2017.
