No. 6 Oklahoma kicks off its Big 12 schedule Saturday night when it hosts Kansas State in what has been considered a trap game of sorts for the Sooners in recent years. However, the Brent Venables era is off to a solid start in Norman, Oklahoma, following victories over UTEP, Kent State and Nebraska. The Sooners dominated the Cornhuskers 49-14 on the road behind 312 yards, rushing with nearly six yards per carry.
Oddly enough, Kansas State became the fourth opponent in a row to lose in the week before playing Oklahoma when the Wildcats dropped a shock on undefeated Tulane in Week 3. K-State scored a field goal as time ran out in the first half , but put in just 141 yards in the second half despite two interceptions. The gig came just a week after Missouri dropped 40 points.
Oklahoma defeated Kansas State 37-31 last season thanks to two touchdown passes in the second half from Spencer Rattler. The Sooners also always have a dominant lead of 77-21-4. However, Kansas State has won two of its last three matchups, including a 38-35 win the last time these teams played in Norman.
oklahoma vs. Kansas State: Need to Know
Disruptive Defense: When Venables took over, there was little doubt that the Sooners would put another premium on defensive play. In a dominant win over Nebraska, the Sooners showed all sorts of tricks to make the Cornhuskers’ offensive strikes hell. Four different players took up sacks, while defensive linemen Ethan Downs and Jonah Laulu each took multiple tackles for losses. Kansas State’s offensive line will be another challenge, but OU can make life difficult.
Deuce is loose: The country’s most underrated player plays in Manhattan, Kansas. Running back Deuce Vaughn recorded 1,404 yards rushing, 468 yards receiving and 22 total touchdowns in a breakout second season. With 388 all-purpose yards and three scores in three games, Vaughn is already back on track to match those high numbers. Kansas State is willing to move Vaughn across the field to create mismatches, including out-to-slot receiver, making him one of the most unique playmakers in the sport.
Easy transition back: Quarterback Dillon Gabriel chose Oklahoma as his transfer destination to team up with Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby, his former OC at UCF. Three games in, the transition was easier than anyone expected. Gabriel has thrown at least 230 yards and two touchdowns in each of his three starts. He also has a few hasty scores, including a career-long 61m runner a week ago. Gabriel has built a strong bond with future NFL receiver Marvin Mims, who is nearly halfway through his 2021 stats, just three games into the season.

Featured game | Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State Wildcats
Kansas State has quietly played Oklahoma better than anyone since Chris Klieman took over the program in 2019. The Wildcats defeated OU each of Klieman’s first two seasons and played the Sooners within a score in 2021. There was optimism that this could be the best team of Klieman’s tenure, but an unexplained loss to Tulane put a damper on that. However, expect the Wildcats to keep the game within two scores. Prediction: Kansas State +13
