The 2022 MLB regular season is entering the stretch run, but it’s never too early to look ahead to next year. On Wednesday afternoon, Major League Baseball announced its regular season schedule for 2023. Opening day is Thursday, March 30, with all 30 teams in action. The All-Star Game is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Most notably, 2023 will be the first season with a new, more balanced season. Interleagues will no longer play rotating divisions every year. Each team will play at least one series against every other team starting next season. MLB and MLB Players’ Association agree on more balanced schedule as part of new collective bargaining agreement.
“In the new balanced schedule, all 30 clubs will face each other at least one series in 2023,” MLB operations chief and strategy officer Chris Marinak said in a statement. “This new format allows for more consistent match-ups with opponents as clubs compete for post-season seats, especially in the recently expanded Wild Card round. In addition, this fan-friendly format allows fans to get more opponent match-ups. with a particular focus on dramatic expansions to our most exciting Interleague matchups, and brings greater national exposure to the star players throughout our game.”
The new format includes 52 division matches (formerly 76), 64 other intraleague matches (formerly 66) and 46 interleague matches (formerly 20). Each team plays a four-game home-and-home series against their geographic interleague rival (think Mets vs. Yankees, etc.) plus a three-game series against the other 14 teams in the other league.
