Sunday summary
Gauff overcame a tough challenge from Zhang.
Zhang got a break on Gauff’s first service game of the match to take a 2-0 lead, but the American broke right back.
With neither player taking advantage of the advantage for too long, the breakthrough came when Zhang served at 5-5. She hit an unforced foul on a forehand at the break point to put Gauff in the game.
Leading 6-5, Gauff overpowered her opponent with three winners in the next game to claim the set.

In the second set, the 18-year-old had to fight back from a 3-5 deficit after losing service in the eighth game. Also in the ninth game, she had to reject Zhang on set point.
Gauff showed a balanced level that belied her age as she won the last four games of the set.

This almost certainly won’t be the last time she’s in the final eight in Flushing Meadows.
Casper Ruud hit his ticket to the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time thanks to a four-set victory over Corentin Moutet.
In the third set, Ruud was devastating on serve. He hit five aces and won 72 percent of its first service points.
The Norwegian also consistently broke Moutet’s serve early in the sets to maintain firm control. It happened with Moutet who served 1-2 in the first and fourth set and with the second set deadlocked at 1-1.
Ruud found the score somewhat flattered.
“I had a great start and the [two] sets I won didn’t show the real result,” he said said in his interview at the court. “It was much more difficult. Corentin is a very tricky player. He has all the shots, walks well. He can do trick shots and everything. I really had to stay focused and stay sharp and I played really well until I broke back in the third, which was frustrating.”
