Kylian Mbappe struck twice Paris Saint Germain launched their latest quest for Champions League glory with victory over Juventus. The France international took just five minutes to put his side ahead after running on Neymar’s daring through ball and he doubled his score with just 22 minutes to go.
Juventus substitute Weston McKennie narrowed the deficit with a header in the 53rd minute after Mbappe squandered a great opportunity for the hosts and failed to cross the ball to the unmarked Neymar early in the second half.
“Mbappe played a great game and he is obsessed with goals,” said PSG manager Christophe Galtier. “Maybe he hasn’t seen Neymar, I don’t know.”
However, Juventus were unable to force the equalizer and slipped to a 2-1 defeat in Group H.
Both Mbappe and Galtier faced a backlash before the game for laughing off a question as to why the team took a private jet this weekend for a short trip to a game in Nantes.
“Are you serious to react like that???”, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo tweeted. “Wake up guys???”
Galtier and Mbappe, who were questioned during a press conference on PSG’s jet trip to Nantes on Monday, looked at each other and the World Cup winner burst out laughing when his coach responded with a joke.
“This morning we talked about it with the company that organizes our trips and we are investigating traveling on sand yachts,” Galtier said. When asked for his opinion on the matter, Mbappe said he had none.
A video of their comments immediately went viral, sparking angry reactions from social media users, environmentalists and ministers. Galtier later labeled his joke as “bad taste”.
