WASHINGTON, September 24, 2022 – Behrmann Meat and Processing Inc., an Albers, Illinois facility, is recalling approximately 87,382 pounds of various ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products that may have been adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. FSIS expects additional product labels to be added in the near future and urges consumers to check back regularly to view updated labels.
The various RTE meat products were produced from July 7, 2022 to September 9. 2022. The list of products and product codes of the RTE meat products subject to a recall can be found here and contains all pack sizes for all products with the affected lot codes. Available labels for the RTE meat products can be found here.
The products to be recalled bear the plant number “EST 20917” in the USDA inspection mark. These items were shipped to retail locations and wholesale distributors in Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri.
The issue was discovered through product and environmental testing conducted by FSIS and the facility, which identified: Listeria monocytogenes in the processing environment and in products produced by the facility.
There are no confirmed reports of illness or side effects resulting from the use of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that mainly affects older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, individuals outside these risk groups are affected.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads outside the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, preterm birth, or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections can occur in older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Individuals in the higher risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating the contaminated food should seek medical attention and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.
FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ pantries, refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify that recall companies are: customers of the recall and that steps are taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
Media and consumers with questions about the recall should contact Connie Haselhorst, VP Operations, Behrmann Meat and Processing Inc., at (618) 248-5151 or connie@behrmannmeats.com.
